Macho image of science deters women

Women are put off jobs in science because of a “macho” culture in the industry, the first female president of the Royal Society of Chemistry has said.

While almost as many girls as boys take A-level chemistry, there are still barriers excluding women from the workplace, Lesley Yellowlees said. A report to which she contributed said that women were under-represented in science and technology companies because male recruiters sought out men when making appointments.
