Study warns of racism in universities

British student leaders are calling for anonymous course marking in universities to prevent biased marking against “foreign sounding name[s]”.

The National Union of Students said anonymous marking already practiced in universities should be extended to cover course work wherever possible while contested works should be reassessed by a second lecturer.

It said the move is needed to address concerns raised by the a new study that found many students with non-British backgrounds complain about different forms of discrimination they are grappling with in universities.

The study named Race for Equality, found among the 900 surveyed students from African, Asian and Caribbean backgrounds, 23 percent believe universities are “cliquey” with seven percent others describing them as “racist”.
